Who Should Apply?
Students with diverse interests and abilities outside of STEM are specifically invited to apply. We value a wide variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that enrich interdisciplinary exploration. At SAGE, you will connect with STEM professionals who are passionate about all areas of life. You’ll meet athletes, artists, writers, cooks, musicians, rock climbers, scuba divers, surfers, and more.
- Grade: must currently be in 9th, 10th or 11th grade in a Northern California high school
- Age: must be under 18 years of age to attend the full week of camp
How to Apply
Students apply online via a platform called Kaleidoscope, where they can save progress and pick up where they left off. A recommendation from a counselor, coach, teacher, or any adult is required. Students will input the recommender’s email address, and the system will send the request directly to the recommender.
Applications for the 2025 SAGE camp will open on Monday February 3rd. It is the same application form for the 3 California laboratories (SLAC, Berkeley, and Lawrence Livermore Laboratory) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. If accepted, students will get their closest laboratory assigned.
Student FAQs
How does the student get the most out of SAGE Camp?
SAGE Camp is an opportunity to make professional connections, to bond with fellow students, to learn about scientific discoveries and engineering processes, and to explore possibilities for the future. Having an open and curious mindset will enable a student to get the most out of SAGE Camp.
What are important dates and emails to keep in mind?
1. Application Deadline
The deadline for students to submit their application will be March 14th. All applicants will need a recommendation from a teacher, coach, counselor, or supervisor, and we will give them one more week to submit this recommendation (until March 21st). The application form (via Kaleidoscope online portal) will ask for the recommender’s name and email address and contact the recommender directly. Please LET YOUR RECOMMENDER know this.
2. Notifications by email regarding the status of student applications.
Kaleidoscope will send emails with your application status and important reminders. Please apply with an email address that you check regularly.
If you are selected to attend the SAGE camp at SLAC, you will be notified by email, and you will need to reply to that email to either accept or decline your spot.
Students who plan to attend must submit the required documents.

Is there a “dress code”?
The dress code is "business casual" all week. This can include jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and other casual business wear. Plan to wear comfortable shoes always. There is a Gala Dinner at the end of the week. For that event, plan to wear "dressy casual" or "business dressy": This can include nice jeans and dressy top, knee length dress or skirt & dressy top, or dressy pants outfit, and accessories (no high heels as we will be walking to the venue).
Can students bring their own snacks and favorite food?
There will be enough snacks for everyone throughout the week, including options for vegetarians. If you have a favorite snack that you’d like to share with everyone, please feel free to bring it. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided free during SAGE Camp at SLAC.
Can the students use their cell phones while at camp?
We have planned activities that will engage the students and create positive experiences that we hope they will remember for a long time. We encourage students to minimize use of their mobile device while at camp. It is best to keep expensive gadgets at home. Taking photos is allowed and encouraged.
